Running like a Girl: A Note to Our Daughter for Her 10th Birthday

You run like a girl day after day,
putting one foot after the next on your way,

facing all of life’s little challenges with a big toothy grin;
“Bring it on!” you say, again and again.

Finding the joy in the simple things in life,
putting puzzles together with little strife,
With joy, you show your accomplishment,
and we show you much astonishment.

But inside we have little surprise;
we have seen what you can do
with our very own eyes.

You dance like no one is watching,
and you comfort those who are hurting.
You run miles like no other,
and sometimes you may whack your brother.
School work is giving you trouble?
Time is the answer, and you pop it like a bubble.

We have seen you fall in love with art and colors,
opening your eyes to see all of earths wonders.
You stop and smell every rose life has to offer
and see time as barely a bother.

You burst into our life like a shooting star,

leaving a trail of light in your wake.
It is a trail we follow with honor;
we are proud to be your mother and father.

So keep running like a girl,
and continue to give life a good whirl.
Face all of your challenges with a smile;
you will run true mile after mile.

“Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)
KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!”

Kid, we can’t wait to see the places you’ll go!
