A Birthday Poem to Our Son or A Tribute to Dr. Seuss

(For Josh)

Today is your birthday,
And we will make a bit of hay about you turning 9 today.

You make us laugh deep from our belly,
And in the bath tub you sing loud, unlike Milli Vanilli.
You used to scream in the car when we drove places,
Now you don’t stop talking as we go through our paces.
You love watching Minecraft videos (we aren’t quite sure what for)
And we listen to you slam dunk the basketball as the rim hangs on your door.
You enjoy playing Halo and Madden video games,
And have yet to think your Mom and Dad lame.

All along the way we have watched you grow;
And it is true the time has not gone slow.
Yesterday, you were learning to crawl,
Today, you are traveling around kicking a soccer ball.

Many people don’t know about your big heart,
and we love that you show people you care through written art.
You are an emotionally deep young man,
and we are prouder of you than imagine you can.

“So be sure when you step,
Step with care and great tact.
And remember that life’s A Great Balancing Act.
And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed)
Kid, you’ll move mountains.”

And we can’t wait to be there holding your hand,
As you move the mountains only you can.
