night

without stars
piercing the darkness
to stamp out ignorance
and injustice; an acolyte ringing
the bell of oppression, darkening what
was once just and bathed in light.

darkness

shrouds frost’s
path; the worn
way yields to weeds
that choke grass and equity;
the wrong path becomes muddy, worn,
and abjectly absolute, a misshapen, darkened way.

one star shatters a once deafening darkness,
light that is made brilliant by
the iniquity surrounding the ray
of streaming incandescence; the
visible energy shines
and provides

hope.
